The Media Challenge Awards are organised by the Media Challenge Initiative as a means of honoring and celebrating individuals and organizations doing exceptional work in the media industry in Uganda. Our 2016 awards awards ceremony will take place on 26th November 2016 in a high profile Media Night Gala that will bring together media students and media practitioners. The Media Challenge awards are only open to students studying Media in Uganda. The official theme for this year’s awards is “mentoring the next generation of journalists”. This event will also provide students with a chance to meet and network with their role models.
The Inter-Institutional Media Challenge
Since 2012, Global Media Enterprise has been hosting the Inter-institutional Media Challenge (IMC). IMC is a media platform that brings together journalism students to compete and showcase their skills. In this challenge, students are tasked to replicate real life scenarios that take place in the TV newsroom by forming news teams and producing a news bulletin. The best two students are then chosen to work with NTV Uganda for a year.
Nomination and Voting
Our in-house nomination council shall nominate the individuals and programs that fit in the designated categories based on the scope of each individual’s field of work. A panel of judges has been selected to rank the different stories submitted by reporters.
Voting for the various categories will be done online via The Global Media Enterprise gmeug.com
Who is eligible to vote?
Voting is restricted to media students only as we believe that media students objectively understand the professional and technical qualities that make for a good broadcaster. Media students will be required to present their registration number for them to be able to vote.
Award Categories
1. New Face of News Award. Male/Female
This award will go to a new face on TV that has made her/his mark and has become a credible source of information as well as a household item on TV news.
2. Unconventional Male/female TV presenter Award
This award will go to a presenter who has redefined TV presenting to a disruptive edge. He/she pushes hard to engage the audience and always delivers with new programming and unreasonable ideas. Such presenters make interviews a conversation rather than an examination but are able to intelligently put on the spot controversial topics/questions. They do research and they sound highly researched and knowledgeable with facts about the issue. The never stick to the script.
3. Unconventional Male/Female Radio Presenter Award
This award will go to a presenter who has taken Radio presenting to the next exceptional level. He/she pushes hard to engage the audience and always delivers with new programming and unreasonable ideas. Such presenters make interviews a conversation rather than an examination but are able to intelligently put on the spot controversial topics/questions. They do research and they sound highly researched and knowledgeable with facts about the issue. The never stick to the script.
4. TV with Best Local Content Award
According to the 2013 Uganda Communications Act, UCC is charged with setting standards, monitoring and enforcing compliance relating to content especially local content quotas in order to promote national culture, pluralism, diversity, create employment and develop local film industry. This award goes to a media house that has invested to producing and showing local content.
5. Live event coverage Award e.g 2016 Uganda Election, Pope’s visit
In this digital age, live TV is on demand especially the blow by blow coverage of very important events that people are unable to attend in person. The best live event coverage award will be given to the media house that redefined live coverage and gave media students a great viewing experience through cutting edge technology in areas of production, graphics and social media to complement live coverage.
6. Live sports commentary Award
Live sports commentary on Radio stations in Uganda has made it easy for people all over the country to follow the proceedings of sports events like soccer in real time. This award will go to soccer commentators on radio stations in Uganda that media students find most engaging, informative and entertaining in their blow by blow commentary, while providing unrivalled soccer analysis
7. Media House with Best Internship Program Award
Internships provide students with an opportunity to engage in real time work experience to put into action the theories learnt in class. This award is to recognize a media house which has provided the most positive and engaging experience for their interns. Students will consider the following to vote; induction and training, content of work, ability to work on different projects, responsibility, interaction with senior management, mentorship, feedback on performance, social life, and quality of supervision
8. Most Humorous News Concept Award
The 21st century has seen the emergence of comedic journalism that employs the use of satire and humor to relay news to people. This award will go to news segments or TV shows that comes with a doze of humor and satire to lighten the news bulletin.
9. Social Media Utilization Award
Social media is part and parcel of the media and news industry. Social media is playing a complementary role in driving news to audiences in real time, breaking news and sharing news. This award will go to a TV station that has incorporated the use of social media in sharing updates, news and information and one that media students have found to be highly engaging on social media.
10. The Bbale Francis Best Male News Anchor Award
Named in memory legendary news anchor JEM Bbale Francis, this award goes to a male news anchor that not only provides dynamic presentation of news but also draws audiences through incorporation of wise commentary.
11. The Rose Mary Nankabirwa Best Female News Anchor Award
This award recognizes a female news anchor that not only presents the news per se but also represents the whole complex nexus of all the elements of news presentation. Named in memory of former meticulous news anchor Rose Mary Nankabirwa, this award will go to a female news anchor identified by media students as the best engaging news presenter in the English language category
12. The Danny Kyazze Best Male Radio News Anchor Award
13. Cartoonist Extraordinaire award 2016
This award will go to cartoonist whose work is characterized by originality, editorial effectiveness, quality of drawing, and pictorial effect and one that media students find most professional and appealing.
14. Television Animation of the Year
TV animation is an exciting field and dynamic field that require one to pay attention to detail, be creative and be technically savvy with the latest animation technology. This award will go to a video animator whose work is featuring on TV in Uganda either as a show or advert and media students find such work to bring characters and stories to life.
15. Newspaper of the year 2016
Newspaper of the year award recognizes a newspaper that has exhibited outstanding work across all departments in 2016 including news excellence, advertising excellence, news presentation, editorial & commentary, best use of photography, diversity, special sections, promotions, community service and best use of multimedia platforms like websites and social media.
Therefore, this award will go to a mainstream newspaper that media students not only recognize as a trusted source of information and news, but also dream to work with or be employed by such an institution.
16. Best Newspaper inserted Magazine (NiMs)
NiMs are popular with readers and advertisers because of the editorial focus, offering detail and it is ability to cover all tastes of readers. The award for the Best NIMs will go that newspaper magazine that media students will find as most engaging and are always looking forward to read.
17. Best newspaper front Page
The front page of any newspaper is its front door that every reader looks at to know what is inside. This award will go to the newspaper which students find to be the best designed front page of all the papers looking at cover photo, layout, graphics and what cover stories make headlines.
18. Best TV Feature News Story Program
Besides the hard news that comes with breaking news, specialized feature stories bring the human interest element to news with a flesh of detail. This award will go to the feature story on TV that students find highly engaging, informative, provocative and entertaining to follow.
19. News Site of the Year
In the digital era, websites have become a new platform for sharing news besides the traditional media. Websites can be a standalone publication or just an internet version of the print or broadcast media. This award will go to a news site that is a go to for students in accessing news online.
20. Tabloid of Year
Tabloids normalize hyperbole by sensationalizing stories to capture the attention of the readers but most importantly expose the aspects of world that is disgracefully and deliberately hidden from the public eye. This award will go to a tabloid newspaper in Uganda that appeals to media students.
21. ShowBiz TV Show of the Year
This award will go to the TV show that media students find to be highly engaging, informative, and entertaining, presenters of the show hold broadcast ethics but also go beyond the edge to be controversial and put people on the spot. The students will also look at attention to detail in production, live interviews, coverage of events, costumes, creativity of the presenter and caliber of programming/scheduling.
22. Reporter of the Year
23. Talk show of year
Prepared but unscripted Talk Shows Talk show hosts have unique personalities with a technique that makes the show relatable to the audience. Students would consider at the programming package of the show but most importantly the caliber of show host and how his/her infectious personality keeps the guests and the audience on the edge.
24. Best TV Artworks or Graphics
TV Artworks and Graphics never get the hype they deserve but the fact is these determine how attractive, eye/mind stressing, and technical the station signature looks like to the viewers. Graphics and visual design now form part of the media curriculum plus there is a whole industry for it. This award will go to a TV station whose graphics are technically executed.
25. TV and Radio Commentator/Guests of the Year: Guests make the work of the journalists
TV and Radio guests complete the work of journalists. Our work is to put guests in spotlight and get information that the audience wants to hear. Guests are the unsung hero of the media. In this edition of the awards, we are awarding commentators or guests that media students love to follow and listen when they are hosted. These could also be people that media students would die to interview.
Honorary Awards
26. Media Visionary Award Robert Kabushenga
This is a special accolade designed to celebrate and recognize media leaders for their vision and making a significant impact on the media industry in Uganda. Recipients of the media visionary award are honored for their contribution to the media industry and their potential to dictate media growth and strides in Uganda. These are individuals whose vision and dedication has shaped the advancement and growth of media organizations, companies and institutions. Recipients of this award are selected by the nomination council at Global Media Enterprise.
27. Media Lifetime achievement award Wafula Ogutu, Charles Onyango Obbo
This award recognizes media personalities with an outstanding record and accomplished career in journalism in Uganda. Recipients of this award are writers and presenters who have kept an excellent and exemplary track record as journalists and can be considered media role models to aspiring journalists.
28. Radio Legend
This honorary award will go to individual/s who have stood the test of time on radio airwaves in Uganda and have stayed consistent and their work has inspired others to join the industry
29. TV Legend
The TV legend award will go to an individual/s who have been on the silver screens for a long time and have been consistent in the work. Such individuals have directly or indirectly inspired others using their career story on TV.
