On April 16, 2024, we hosted a "Digital Safety and Security" workshop in partnership with UNESCO IPDC program to equip the next generation of journalists with essential skills for the digital age. The one-day event brought together 15 young journalists and media innovators, focusing on critical aspects of online safety and digital threat management.
In an era where digital platforms have become integral to journalism, the need for robust digital security knowledge has never been more pressing. This workshop aimed to address this need, providing participants with practical strategies to navigate the often-treacherous online landscape safely.
The participants learnt techniques to maintain their privacy and security while conducting research and communicating online. This included guidance on using secure browsers, virtual private networks (VPNs), and understanding digital footprints. They were introduced to various fact-checking and content verification tools. These skills are crucial for maintaining journalistic integrity and combating the spread of fake news.
This compact nature of the workshop allowed for intensive, hands-on learning experiences. Participants engaged in practical exercises, simulating real-world scenarios they might encounter in their journalistic pursuits.
Helga Dionne Akantorama, expressed her appreciation for the workshop: "As a young journalist, I've always been aware of digital threats, but this program has given me concrete tools to protect myself and my sources. It's empowering to feel more confident in my online activities."
The MCI Media Hub, known for its commitment to nurturing young media talent in Uganda, continues to play a vital role in addressing the evolving needs of the journalism industry. This workshop is part of their ongoing efforts to bridge the skills gap and prepare young journalists for the challenges of modern media landscapes.
As digital threats continue to evolve, such training initiatives become increasingly vital. They not only protect individual journalists but also safeguard the integrity of journalism as a whole. The success of this workshop underscores the importance of continued investment in digital safety education for media professionals.
