In a dynamic and ever-evolving media landscape, the need to equip young journalists and media innovators with the skills to not only report but also build sustainable media businesses has never been more critical. Recognizing this imperative, a concerted effort is underway in Uganda to nurture a new generation of media entrepreneurs poised to shape the future of the industry.
On 24th January 2024, we kicked off our 4-day skills-sharing workshop for young journalists and media innovators in Uganda under the theme, "Enhancing Media Professionalism Through Building A Generation of Young Journalist Leaders." This initiative aimed to bridge the skills gap prevalent amongst early-career journalists, while also addressing the pressing issue of youth unemployment in our country, Uganda.
A key focus of the workshop was to train journalists and media innovators in business models, revenue diversification, and effective value propositions for their media ventures. The training was conducted by our team lead Abaas Mpindi and Joram Ndagga from The Innovation Village. By nurturing their expertise in these critical areas early in the trainees’ careers, the initiative aims to stimulate interest and proficiency among young journalists while addressing crucial gaps in media viability and sustainability.
On the last day,the journalists and media innovators pitched their disruptive and innovative media ideas before a panel of judges. The top two media innovations MuFrame and Curio won an incubation as well as financial support to grow the media ventures. This support was aimed at nurturing a culture of collaboration, innovation, and resilience.
This training was in partnership with UNESCO Uganda National Commission.
